Meta Platforms is broadening access to its AI-powered smart glasses as SoftBank rolls out the new Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 in Japan on September 25. The launch gives Meta an additional distribution channel in a key consumer technology market as it extends wearable artificial intelligence beyond smartphones and PCs.
SoftBank has been gradually expanding its smart glasses business in Japan. In June, it became the country's first mobile network operator to sell Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses, and in August it enlarged its assortment. Alongside the Gen 3 release, SoftBank will also add Meta Glasses by LISA to its lineup.
Meta shares closed up 4.5% at $777.59 on Thursday, September 24. SoftBank Group's U.S.-listed shares fell 7.6%.
