US asks Anthropic and OpenAI to curb UK access to AI models

The administration of US President Donald Trump asked Anthropic PBC and OpenAI to stop providing new artificial intelligence models to the UK's AI Safety Institute without prior review by American authorities. A British official confirmed the move to Bloomberg following a report by Politico.

The US government aims to ensure domestic models are safe before sharing them with foreign partners. OpenAI declined to comment, while Anthropic and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Earlier in the year, the US government blocked Anthropic from providing its latest models to foreign nationals. Anthropic previously withheld the latest version of its Mythos model from the UK institute without providing an explanation.

The decision challenges efforts by UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham to position Britain as a global mediator in AI safety. The UK government downplayed the potential impact, stating that the AI Safety Institute continues to work closely with the US government, international partners, and leading companies including Anthropic and OpenAI.
