The former YouTube executive will oversee global strategy, ad tech and platform development.
The Walt Disney Company announced on Thursday, 17 September 2026, that it has appointed former YouTube executive Adam Smith as chairman of direct-to-consumer for Disney Entertainment. The appointment puts the longtime technology leader in charge of the company's streaming business.
The leadership change underlines the role of Disney+ under Chief Executive Josh D'Amaro, who wants the app to serve as a hub connecting Disney's entertainment, sports, games and experiences segments. In his new position, Smith will lead global entertainment streaming, managing platform development, advertising technology and emerging tech.
Disney hired Smith in 2024. He previously worked as co-president of direct-to-consumer and chief product and technology officer for Disney Entertainment and ESPN. Before joining Disney, Smith spent more than 20 years at Google and YouTube, where he was vice president of product management overseeing music, subscriptions, commerce and premium offerings.
Joe Earley, who previously served as president of direct-to-consumer for Disney Entertainment and earlier as president of Hulu, will transition to a newly created role as president of Disney Entertainment Television franchise and content strategy.
