The navigation issue affects VNAV automation during go-around maneuvers and could delay deliveries.
Boeing has identified a software issue in the navigation system of its 737 MAX jets that can increase pilot workload during landing maneuvers. The flaw affects vertical navigation (VNAV) automation during go-around procedures and may delay customer deliveries of its newest narrowbody aircraft.
Four major US airlines confirmed that their active commercial 737 MAX fleets do not use the affected software version. Aviation analytics firm Cirium tracks a global active fleet of 2,422 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 aircraft as of September 2026.
The Federal Aviation Administration has convened a Corrective Action Review Board to evaluate the malfunction. Boeing had initially projected 2028 for the release of a permanent software patch, but the manufacturer is now working to accelerate that update.
