Why does it hold so many companies?

The fund is close to an index investor. It owns a small slice of almost every large listed company rather than choosing a few, which is why its US filing alone runs to more than a thousand positions.

Is this the whole fund?

No. This form reports US-listed shares. The fund also holds bonds, unlisted property and shares on every other major exchange, and those are most of what it owns.

Can I copy this portfolio?

Copying it adds nothing. The holdings are close to the whole market, so a broad index fund gives you almost the same companies, and its fee is published.

Why people follow this portfolio

Norges Bank manages Norway's Government Pension Fund Global, the world's largest sovereign wealth fund. These are its US-listed positions from the latest filing.

Norway decided in the 1990s to save the money from its oil instead of spending it. The money is invested outside Norway so the domestic economy does not overheat. The fund that resulted owns about one and a half per cent of every listed company on earth. Its US filing alone runs to more than a thousand positions worth around a trillion dollars.

A portfolio that wide is close to the market itself. The fund tracks a broad index with adjustments instead of picking a few companies. So its largest holdings are the largest companies in the market, in roughly the order one would expect. This list is not a basis for selecting stocks.

It is useful for two things: the fund's size, and the rules it publishes. The fund publishes how it votes and excludes companies on ethical grounds, and it states its reasoning. Its positions show what a very long-term owner with no need to sell actually holds.

Positions come from the 13F form Norges Bank files with the SEC each quarter. The form covers long positions in US-listed shares only. The fund also holds bonds, property and shares on every other major exchange, none of which appear here.
